A

Active Directory (AD)

In a nutshell, it's an identities management system used to organize items by groups and also to apply security policies group on VMs and users. Please, refer to the Active Directory Integration for FLEXXIBLE|Appliances article for more information.

Alert definition

A set of parameters defined to generate an alert when certain values are reached. For example, a visual notification is triggered when the VM memory consumption is greater than 80% and has stayed in that condition for more than 5 mins. Alert subscription

Application server

Application template definition

This is a Flexxible|SUITE entity that correlates a hypervisor VM with a template. From this entity, you can manage published applications and you can also change the status of the VM(i.e.. Ready for Deploy, in edition). Please, refer to the Flexxible|Template Manager article for more information.

AppServer/Desktop upgrade

Application Server Farm (ASF)

This is the Flexxible|SUITE entity that correlates the Delivery Groups and the Citrix Studio Catalogs for app and SDI. This is where you can assign Active Directory Groups to the App or SDI. Catalog or Machine catalog

A Citrix XenApp&XenDesktop entity that contains a set of virtual machines which can be delivered to end-users through a Delivery Group.  You can find useful information in the Virtual Desktop Templates and Application server farms articles.

Citrix Hooks

Set of dll files specific to Citrix which help us identify devices and peripherals and move them from the endpoint to the corresponding VDI or SDI.

Citrix Receiver

Cluster

A computer cluster is a set of loosely or tightly connected computers or VMs that work together so that, in many respects, they can be viewed as a single system.  That way you can increase performance and availability.

Control panel

This is a VM dedicated to the automatic deployment of the whole infrastructure in the enterprise appliances. After the deployment is completed, it can be used to view the status of the storage, the VCC roles, to perform maintenance tasks and to execute quick actions. Controller appliance

Physical or virtual personal computer or server processor.

Desktop-as-a-service (DAAS)

It stands for "Desktop as a Service". It's the infrastructure dedicated to providing pay-per-use desktops.

Dedicated domain

It's a domain which is exclusively assigned to a tenant or customer on the domain import process on a multitenant deployment.

Delivery Controller

Also known as DDC or DDC Controller. It's a Citrix role, which is responsible for the VDA coordination, their registration, and delivery to the users, as well as the catalogues and delivery groups management. Delivery group

Aka "DG". It's the Citrix entity which specifies those users with an assigned machine catalogue (template). Please, refer to Excluding and managing desktop catalogs article for more information.

Desktop VDI

it's a virtual machine dedicated to one user, who owns the use of that VM in exclusive mode.

Desktop broker farm

Or "Citrix farm". It's the infrastructure set of servers that they manage the resource delivery and access(VDIs, SDIs, and apps). Please, refer to

Desktop template definition

VDI Manager entity that relates a VM from the hypervisor with a template. It allows to update that VM status ("Ready for Deploy"; "In Edition"). Please, refer to the Flexxible|Template Manager article for more information.

Distributed File System (DFS)

By Microsoft. It stands for "Distributed File System". It enables you to group shared folders that are located on different servers into one or more logically structured namespaces. Each namespace appears to users as a single shared folder with a series of subfolders. However, the underlying structure of the namespace can consist of numerous file shares that are located on different servers and in multiple sites. Distributed File System Replication (DFSR)

It's also known as "DFS Replication". It allows you to efficiently replicate folders (including those referred to by a DFS namespace path) across multiple servers and sites. It uses a compression algorithm known as remote differential compression (RDC). RDC detects changes to the data in a file, and it enables DFS Replication to replicate only the changed file blocks instead of the entire file. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

The "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol" is a customer/server protocol which automatically provides with an Internet protocol host (IP) with its IP address and other related configuration information, such as the default gateway and the subnet mask. Differential Disk

Disconnect

Getting out of a machine leaving a started and disconnected session (non-saved changes could be lost in case of restart).

The user stopped working on a started session in a VM. In this case, it's possible he left running applications but didn't save changes.

Domain Controller (DC)

Domain trust relationship

A trust relationship is a relationship established between two domains in a way that allows the users of a domain to be recognized by the Domain Controllers of another domain.

Disaster recovery system (DRS)

It allows a system or technology infrastructure to prevent unexpected failures to occur or to guarantee the post-failure service continuity by its contingency mechanisms (policies, tools, procedures...).

EndPoint

The physical device that allows the Citrix resource delivery (e.g. PCs, thin clients, tablets, etc). It's the device "touched" by the user.

It's a persistent virtual desktop infrastructure or VDI.

Event Log

It's a machine resource that records information about the system and sends notifications to help the administrators to prevent and diagnose system issues. Flexxible IT|Application Publisher

Flexxible|EndPoint Diagnostic

It's a tool that runs on a device and allows to perform a diagnose about that device network quality and to send execution reports. It's used to know the user network quality and to validate that the minimum requirements are accomplished. It can be download here. It stands for "Software-Defined Storage" and it allows to build a data storage volume clustered by software, using several nodes to replicate and provide resilience to data.

Group Policy Object (GPO)

Group Policy Object or group directive policy is a set of rules, that control de work environment for the user and the computer accounts. That directive group provides centralized management and configuration for OSs, apps, and users in an Active Directory environment.

Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI)

Hyperconvergence represents the combination of virtual and physical components of an infrastructure, such as servers, networks, and storage hardware, resulting in a single device controlled by software. Please, refer to the Flexxible|SmartWorkspaces Infrastructure article for more information.

Hypervisor 

Software solution that allows the parallel execution of multiple compute instances (virtual machines that may have different operative systems) in a single or multiple sets of physical hardware.

Identity Disk

Citrix virtual disk which stores the machine identities where it's connected to. E.g. The AD account for that machine.

Launching a custom operation

Launching a custom operation: To run a script in a VM, which was previously packaged in a VDI Manager button. Please, refer to the Corrective snippets (a.k.a Custom Operations) article for more information.

Latency

It's the time that the remote commands take to get to destiny. E.g. A user presses down a key in his endpoint. The latency at that user endpoint will determine the time that the VDI takes to notice that key was pushed down.

Mirroring

It's the ability to mirror some content. E.g. Two disks using a mirroring setup (RAID1) will allow us to prevent from losing any data, in case one of them fails, by having each disk data mirrored one another. You can find useful information in the Two-way administration for Published Apps article.

Managed services account (MSA)

It's intended to provide critical applications with its own domain accounts isolation, while it avoids the need of an administrator to manually manage that accounts credentials. It's the ability to integrate a domain to deployment so that contents several clients or tenants. To do so, every tenant is usually closed inside a single OU in that domain, where all its resources are orchestrated. It's a storage device which is network-accessible.

It references a computer unit. Usually a server. It's a "point of intersection or union of several elements that converge in the same place". For example: in a computer network each of the machines is a node, and if the network is the Internet, each server also constitutes a node.

Organizational Unit (OU)

To overpass the setup limits. E.g. The Azure Overflow feature allows overflowing desktops in Azure, once the on-premise VMs limit is achieved.

Partner

Persistent desktop

It's a VDI type, which keeps all the user changes and once it's deployed, it loses its link to the template.

A Citrix technology that consists in attaching an additional disk to a virtual machine which provides persistence to user changes in non-persistent desktops.

Ready for Deploy (Templates)

Single-Document Interface (SDI)

It's a user session with Windows complete experience in a virtual server, which contains several users working in the same VM. Please, refer to How to deploy a new SDI/Published Apps Template article for more information.

SmartCard

It's any pocket card with integrated circuits (ICC) (e.g. a credit card, an identifier card, etc), which enables some programmed logic to be executed. It requires a reader to be read.

Snapshot

A snapshot or checkpoint is a capture (like a photograph) of a virtual machine, including its data and devices in a specific time. After creating the snapshot and keep working with the VM, it's possible to rollback to the previous status by recovering any of the snapshots. Storefront

It's a Citrix role, which is responsible for the resource graphic presentation to the user. AKA the graphic interface displayed after login, which allows the user to access his associated desktops or apps by clicking on the related icons. Surrogate

A specific template copy in a hosting unit different from the original. When the template is updated, the surrogate takes a maximum of 4 hours to replicate those changes.

Synchronize infrastructure

VDI Manager job, which periodically runs every hour or when any changes are performed in the infrastructure, which propagates those performed from Citrix to VDI OS Manager and vice-versa.

Template

AKA "golden image". It's a VM used as a base to deploy desktops or appsevers, based in his configuration. Template designers is an Active Directory group, which allows the included users to access the templates from the Storefront, to edit them. Please, refer to the Flexxible|Template Manager article for more information.

Template Deployment

The automated virtual machine creation process and its setup as a template or a gold image. In other words, to install the Citrix VDA and to set it up for working with the deployed infrastructure. Please, refer to the Flexxible|Template Manager article for more information.

Tenant or client

It's the unit that groups all the client resources on multitenant deployments. If those tenant users are allowed to access VDI OS Manager, they'll only see their tenant resources. Please, refer to the Tenants view article for more information.

Token

(Double Token): It's the extra component to complete the user login with a two-steps login method (e.g. an email or SMS service that requires entering a provided code to complete the login process). Deprecated 4.4.

Universal Naming Convention (UNC)

The Universal Naming Convention (UNC) is the naming system used in Microsoft Windows for accessing shared network folders and printers on a local area network(LAN).

Unregistered

It's a VDA status, which makes it lose its ability to register itself in the controller and so, it gets the user out. If a desktop is "unregistered", the user won't be allowed to work.

Virtual Client Computing Roles (VCC Roles)

They're the virtual infrastructure servers that take part in a deployment. On that set of roles, we may find Citrix virtual machines. The VMs perform different tasks like access management, orchestration, control, etc.

Virtual Desktop Agent (VDA)

It's the Citrix component responsible for installing the user resources. That includes the processes and services running in the machine, that are the client part which "talks" with the Citrix delivery controller.

It's a virtual machine, which is exclusively dedicated to a single user.

VDI Client

Flexxible IT client software, which is installed in each user VM, infrastructure and appliance resource.  It performs different tasks for orchestration, monitoring, remote and automated process execution, etc.

It's a physical node responsible for hosting user virtual machines (desktop or appservers), but not infrastructure VMs (VCC roles).

Virtual Desktop Template (VDT)

VDT (Virtual Desktop Template): It's the VDI Manager entity, which correlates the Citrix Delivery Groups and the Catalogues for the desktops. It allows to assign AD groups for massive deployments and to modify the number of desktops.

Virtual Workspace

It's a work environment non-based in a physical location (like the traditional server/client in a specific location and only accessible from it). They allow relocation, remote work and promise central and simplified management vs. the traditional way.

Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN)

It's a method that enables to create logically independent networks, even if they are located in the same physical network. This way a user could have several VLANs in the same router or switch. It could be said that each of these networks group the computers in a specific network segment. There are clear advantages to creating these partitions to manage a network.

VM Manager

A Flexxible|SUITE entity which defines the management interface and the location for each hypervisor cluster. E.g. The vCenter is specified here for a VMware cluster or the VMM for a Hyper-V cluster.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

It stands for Virtual Private Network. It's a virtual private network which is able to connect several devices as if they were in the same physical location by emulating the local network connections. It's virtual because it connects two physical networks; and private because only those computers that are members of a local network on any of the VPN sides are allowed to access. It can be stated as VPN Site-to-Site or Client-to-Site VSS.

Windows file copy service (known as previous versions or snapshots), which once it's started and configured it allows to restore file previous versions.

Wholesaler
